Paid To Travel went to interview Charlie Pomroy, long-term expat in Cambodia, founder of Angkor City Football Club, and now head coach of the Nauru international football team.
And with him getting paid to play, or coach the beautiful game we decided, why not ask him how to go about getting paid to travel whilst coaching and playing football?
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
Born in Stevenage, my childhood was spent chasing the dream of becoming a professional footballer. Despite representing England at youth tournaments all over the world and being tipped to become the next Colin Hendry, I ended up playing non league until the age of twenty one, giving up to focus on my coaching career instead.
When and how did you move abroad? How long have you lived abroad?
Leaving England in 2010, with £500 and a one way ticket to Delhi, I set off on an adventure to find my place in the world. After landing in Cambodia in 2012 my work within football would give me the opportunity to plant some roots. In the fourteen years I have been away from England I’ve only ever returned one time.
What is your current job/business?
I am the owner and founder of a professional football club in Cambodia named Angkor City. This started as a bit for profit academy and has grown into a professional club. I have recently been named the head coach of the Nauru national team.
What is the one advice you would give to someone thinking about moving abroad?
With modern day technology connecting with family is easy. If your parents are older and unsure about the internet, teach them before you leave.
On a more serious note the only thing that worries me is healthcare. It’s vital you have good insurance or some emergency savings for the day you hope will never come.
What is the one piece of business advice you would give?
Business and mates don’t mix. Become great mates whilst working with someone but I would avoid ever starting something with your friends.
What is the one program, app, or piece of tech you simply cannot live without?
Curb your enthusiasm, Google tasks to keep my life in order or wireless sports headphones but I’d need something to connect to as well so I’ll bring my phone but is that cheating?
