Paid to Travel – Writing with Reece Ferguson

Paid To Travel went to interview journalist Reece Ferguson who is based in Cambodia. A long term writer about a number of subjects, we went to ask how he came about getting paid to travel by writing.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I was born in the north of Ireland where I attended school in Belfast. I left school at 18 bummed around for a few years before deciding that I wanted to live abroad.

When and how did you move abroad? How long have you lived abroad?

I left Ireland in around 2005 to teach English in China. I simply saw an add in the Big Issue applied, did training and got the job.

That is where I first started writing, initially for China Grooves in Xian before eventually moving to the Philippines and working for Philippines Lifestyle News . I have since lived in different parts of south-east Asia, predominantly working as a writer.

My passions for the most part is politics, but I also enjoy writing about lifestyle and as a sports journalist.

What is your current job/business?

I have been writing for a new publication called Cambodia Lifestyle, as well as doing freelance stuff and website copy, which while not all that interesting does allow me to get paid to travel.

What is the one advice you would give to someone thinking about moving abroad?

If you want to move abroad just do it, move, it really is not that hard. But you will need to be prepared to work hard when you do as nothing comes easy.

I see too many young people move abroad who just want these magical travel jobs, or to be an influencer or some rubbish. I can now get paid to travel because I harnessed my skills over a lot of years, it did not fall on my lap.

What is the one piece of business advice you would give?

Work, work and work. Initially get a job like teaching to pay the bills and in your spare time learn a new skill like writing, copywriting, SEO, or social media management.

Nothing is handed on a plate in this life and the hard you work the luckier you will find you get.

What is the one program, app, or piece of tech you simply cannot live without?

I like muckrake for being the LinkedInn of journalism and Linked Inn for well being LinkedInn. I am also a huge Apple fan and love the small light laptops that I can take anywhere.

I am a huge WordPress fan and feel this is a skill that frankly everyone should just go and learn.
