Digital Nomad Vanimo Guide

There is not much of a digital nomad Vanimo scene, but there are a few expats and tourists related to the border crossing and the surf scene.

Combine this with the fact that it is a very pleasant city, as well as being one of the safest places in Papua New Guinea, and it scores a few extra nomad points.

What the Vanimo?

Vanimo is the capital of Sandaun Province in the far northwest of Papua New Guinea and sits right on the Indonesian border. It is a small coastal town with a population of around 15,000 people and is basically as far west as you can get in PNG without leaving the country. The big deal about Vanimo is its location, because this is where you cross from PNG into Indonesian-controlled West Papua and onwards to Jayapura.

The town is also known for its beaches and surf, with some genuinely good waves attracting surfers from PNG and further afield. It is not exactly a metropolis, but that is part of the appeal. You have a few hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, a pretty chilled out atmosphere and, most importantly, very little of the chaos you get in bigger PNG cities.

Is Vanimo Safe?

Vanimo is ridiculously safe to such a degree that you should probably not visit here first as it will give you a false sense of security.

There are no big walls around hotels and you can walk the streets by yourself. Do not do this when you go to Wewak, for example.

Cost of Living in Vanimo Guide

There’s literally 2-3 hotels here, both of which are good, but neither are cheap. This is PNG, not West Papua. You can’t buy land here, nor can you really do short term rentals.

Vanimo Beach Hotel

The Vanimo Beach Hotel is probably the obvious choice for visitors, with a decent location, rooms, a restaurant and views towards the beach. Rooms are around K500 / US$125 per night, depending on the room and dates.

Vanimo Beach Club

Vanimo Beach Club is another popular option and is right on the beach, with accommodation, a restaurant and bar. Rooms are around K400-500 / US$100-125 per night depending on the room.

Sandaun Surf Hotel

A smaller option aimed more at the surf crowd, with basic accommodation and a convenient location for getting out to the local beaches. Rooms are generally around K300-400 / US$75-100 per night.

Mobile Data in Vanimo

Digicel: around K10 / US$2.50 for 1GB, with larger data packages available.

Vodafone: around K10-15 / US$2.50-4 for small data packages, depending on the current offer.

Telikom: available in Vanimo, although coverage and speeds can be more variable than Digicel.

What to do in Vanimo Guide?

There’s a waterfall and some beaches. Oh, and people surf here. It is also the border crossing with Jayapura and West Papua.

Vanimo Beach

The obvious place to start and one of the reasons you come here. Vanimo has some lovely beaches and the water is generally warm, clear and pretty bloody good.

Surfing

Vanimo is one of the better known surf spots in PNG, with the surf season generally running from around October to April. There are several breaks around the area and this is one of the main reasons you will find foreign visitors here.

Waterfalls

There are waterfalls around the Vanimo area that can be visited as day trips from town. This is not exactly Iceland when it comes to waterfalls, but they are a good way to get out of town and see a bit more of Sandaun Province.

Vanimo Market

There is a local market where you can buy food, fruit and other basic supplies. It is also one of the better places to get a feel for normal life in Vanimo rather than just hanging around the hotels. There’s also a fish market.

Nightlife of Vanimo

Vanimo Beach Club closes at 9pm, everything else closes earlier. I have seen some firewater and karaoke going on at the hotel, but I think this was off of the books.

Getting in and out of Vanimo

Drive to the border and cross into West Papua and onto Jayapura. This is about 90 minutes in total. Or you can fly to Port Moresby. Technically there are boats to Wewak and beyond. Emphasis on technically.

Flights from Vanimo are operated by PNG Air and Air Neiuhini, with flights generally going via Wewack

Vanimo to Port Moresby: around 2 hours 15 minutes
Port Moresby to Vanimo: around 2 hours 15 minutes

There are no international flights from Vanimo, so if you are heading overseas you will generally need to connect through Port Moresby or cross the land border into Indonesia and go via Jayapura.

Overall Digital Nomad Vanimo Scene

Data is good, but hotels do not have Wi-Fi, so top up. E-SIMs seem not to work here. Pleasant IF you can work, but honestly simply not a place you could live long-term.
