Digital Nomad Kokopo Guide
There really isn’t a digital nomad Kokopo scene, well I mean there really is not one in PNG at all, due to cost and safety. Despite this though, Kokopo and New Britain in general are really pleasant places to kick back, so long as money is not an issue.

What the Kokopo?
Kokopo is the capital of East New Britain Province and sits on Blanche Bay, around 20 kilometres from Rabaul. It became the provincial capital after the devastating volcanic eruptions of 1994 destroyed much of Rabaul, although Rabaul remains very much alive as a tourist destination.
The Kokopo District has a population of 106,217 according to the 2024 census, while the whole of East New Britain has 434,757 people. The town is basically the commercial and administrative centre of the province and is also the main base for visiting Rabaul, the volcanoes, World War II sites and the Duke of York Islands. The airport is Tokua, around 10 minutes from Kokopo, so despite feeling pretty remote, getting here is actually fairly straightforward.
Is Kokopo Safe?
Kokopo is one of the safest places in Papua New Guinea and believe me that is a big deal. I would say it is not as safe as Vanimo, or Bougainville, but you can still walk around unmolested, at least in the daytime.
That though is not to say there are no problems here either, so as always keep your wits about you.
Cost of Living in Kokopo Guide
There’s literally 2-3 hotels here, both of which are good, but neither are cheap. This is PNG, not West Papua. Kokopo Beach Bungalows was my favourite here. You can’t buy land here, nor can you really do short term rentals.
Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort
This is my personal favourite and is right on the beach, with bungalows, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and Wi-Fi. Current online prices are around K480 / US$120 per night and upwards, depending on the room and dates.
Rapopo Plantation Resort
A more upmarket option outside the centre, with a swimming pool, private beach, spa, restaurant, bar and Wi-Fi. Current prices are around K440 / US$111 for a Deluxe Double Room and K520 / US$131 for a Premium Double Room, before the 10% VAT shown on the current listing.
Gazelle International Hotel
A more traditional business hotel in Kokopo with a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and Wi-Fi. Current prices start at around K580 / US$145 per night, depending on dates.

Digicel: 7 days 25GB for K75 / US$19, 14 days 50GB for K100 / US$25, or 30 days 250GB for K250 / US$63.
Vodafone: 7 days 8GB for K15 / US$4, 14 days 15GB for K25 / US$6, or 30 days 40GB for K50 / US$13. Larger plans go up to 500GB for K500 / US$125.
What to do in Kokopo Guide?
There’s actually a shit load to do here, such as beach stuff, diving, volcanoes and even dolphin spotting. You can also watch the Gurias, which is pretty good fun.
Visit Rabaul
Rabaul is the big one and is around 20 kilometres from Kokopo. You can explore the ruins, Japanese tunnels, World War II relics and the absolutely mental volcanic landscape.
See Mount Tavurvur
Tavurvur is the active volcano sitting beside Rabaul and is one of the main attractions in East New Britain. You can get close to it with a local guide, although obviously this is not something to fuck around with.
Visit the Duke of York Islands
The Duke of York Islands are around 45 minutes from Kokopo by boat and are excellent for snorkelling, diving, swimming and generally doing absolutely nothing on a tropical island.
Go Dolphin Spotting
Dolphin trips are available from the Kokopo area, with early morning trips being the usual option.
Go Diving
There is good diving around East New Britain, including around the Duke of York Islands and the waters around Rabaul.
Visit the World War II Sites
This area was a major Japanese base during World War II, so there are tunnels, bunkers, aircraft wrecks and other relics all over the area.
Watch the Gurias
The Rabaul Gurias are the local PNG rugby league team and watching them play is a pretty good way to spend an afternoon or evening if they are at home. Better still see them in Port Moresby!
See the Baining Fire Dancers
The Baining people are famous for their fire dancing, where dancers wearing huge masks jump through and around burning embers. This is one of the classic cultural experiences in East New Britain.
Nightlife of Kokopo
Kokopo is not exactly Bangkok when it comes to nightlife. There are bars attached to the main hotels and you can get a few beers, cocktails and food, but things generally wind down fairly early.
There are occasional parties and local events, but this is much more about having a few drinks somewhere pleasant than going absolutely fucking mental until sunrise. For a digital nomad this is probably fine, but if you want nightlife, you are going to get bored pretty quickly.

Getting in and out of Kokopo
Kokopo is served by Tokua Airport, which is actually in Rabaul District and is about a 10-minute drive from Kokopo. The main scheduled direct route is to Port Moresby, with both Air Niugini and PNG Air operating the route. The flight takes around 1 hour 20 minutes.
Tokua to Port Moresby: around 1 hour 20 minutes
Port Moresby to Tokua: around 1 hour 20 minutes
Tokua also has direct flights to Lae, Hoskins, Kavieng, Buka and Kieta depending on the airline and current timetable. Current route data shows approximately:
Tokua to Hoskins: 1 hour
Tokua to Kavieng: 35 minutes
Tokua to Buka: 1 hour
Tokua to Kieta: 1 hour 15 minutes
Tokua to Lae: 1 hour 50 minutes
Schedules change, however, so check the actual date before planning your trip rather than assuming every route operates every day. PNG Air publishes its current timetable through December 2026, while Air Niugini also maintains its domestic route map.
Overall Digital Nomad Kokopo Scene
Data is good, hotels have Wi-Fi, but there are power cuts and connection on data is not perfect. There is not that much of a cafe scene either and don’t even think about co-working spaces.
Overall, Kokopo is pleasant, safe and actually has a shit load to do, but it is expensive and there is basically no digital nomad community. If you have the money and want somewhere tropical where you can work from a hotel, it is possible. If you are looking for a proper digital nomad destination, absolutely fucking not.
