25 Best Digital Nomad Cities in South-East Asia
This marks my definitive list for 2026, with there being many ups and downs. Cambodia and Laos, for example, are up, while Thailand is down, and Myanmar is nowhere to be seen.
All of the cities I have visited or lived in over the year, and as always we count from the bottom, saving the best until last. Cost of living is listed from bare bones to a decent lifestyle.
25) Surabaya, Indonesia
A huge industrial city that most nomads skip, but it’s actually cheap, functional, and has improving infrastructure if you know where to base yourself.
Cost of living – $900–1,500

24) Angeles City, Philippines
While most famous for its “nightlife”, it also has great food and extremely cheap and easy living just a few hours from the beach.
Cost of living – $800–1,500

23) Yangon, Myanmar
Yes, it is politically unstable and effectively a conflict zone in parts, but that is why it is 23rd and not higher. Great food and an overall very cheap standard of living.
Cost of living – $700–1,200

22) Puerto Princesa, Philippines
Prone to brownouts and a bit in the middle of nowhere, but aside from Cebu probably the best beach-to-city ratio in the Philippines.
Cost of living – $800–1,400

21) Luang Prabang, Laos
Less cafés, co-working spaces and the like than Vientiane, but honestly that is part of the charm. Slow, scenic and relaxed.
Cost of living – $900–1,400

20) Hua Hin, Thailand
Hua Hin is not exactly classy and generally more popular with older expats, but it has all the infrastructure needed to live as a digital nomad.
Cost of living – $1,000–1,600

19) Davao, Philippines
A true tech and emerging digital nomad city, but it can be boring and feels a bit in the middle of nowhere.
Cost of living – $900–1,500

18) Battambang, Cambodia
Battambang is not just a seriously underrated digital nomad city in South-East Asia, but an overall hidden gem to live in. Slow, creative, and cheap.
Cost of living – $700–1,200

17) Nha Trang, Vietnam
Great cafés and even better food. Proper cheap Vietnamese-style beach living with a decent expat scene. Nha Trang is one of the best places to live in Vietnam.
Cost of living – $900–1,500

16) Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Extremely well connected and the cheapest good place you can live in Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu does get boring after a while.
Cost of living – $1,000–1,700

15) Siem Reap, Cambodia
Huge café, bar, expat and co-working scene makes this one of the best South-East Asian digital nomad cities. Great street food scene.
Cost of living – $900–1,500

14) Pattaya, Thailand
Most famous for sleaze of course, but there is much more to it and it is not only well set up, but cheap to live in Pattaya.
Cost of living – $1,200–2,000

13) George Town, Malaysia
A strong food and culture city with a growing nomad scene and good infrastructure.
Cost of living – $1,300–2,200

A chaotic but brilliant city with incredible food, strong café culture, and a growing expat scene.
Cost of living – $1,000–1,700

11) Kampot, Cambodia
Kampot is a fabulous nomad city with great food, drink and cafés. A little far from an airport though.
Cost of living – $700–1,300

10) Manila, Philippines
Despite the traffic and the crime, still one of the best digital nomad cities in South-East Asia. Lots of cafés, bars, and co-working spaces. Good city if you know where to go and a gateway to the islands. Easy to live in the Philippines.
Cost of living in Manila: $1,200–1,800

9) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
By far the most expensive on the list, but also has literally every creature comfort you might need combined with safety. Great flight hub, although not exactly visa friendly unless you have a lot of cash.
Cost of living in KL: $1,500–2,500

8) Bangkok, Thailand
Yes it has cafés, bars, expats and co-working spaces, but is also one of the most overrated nomad cities in South-East Asia. Hard to get a cocktail for less than $10, politics is always changing, and the Thai digital nomad visa is not that good. Still makes number 8 though.
Cost of living in Bangkok: $1,500–2,500

7) Vientiane, Laos
Vientiane is an unsung gem when it comes to nomad cities in South-East Asia. Infrastructure has improved greatly, awesome street food, and a burgeoning expat and nomad scene. Not that great yet when it comes to visas, but things are constantly improving.
Cost of living in Vientiane – $1,000–1,800

6) Cebu City, Philippines
Cebu City has most of the benefits of nomad life in the Philippines, such as visas and creature comforts, minus the bullshit, and with great beaches. Now much more connected than it used to be.
Cost of living in Cebu City – $1,300–2,100

5) Da Nang, Vietnam
Vietnam is the cheapest place to live, eat and drink in South-East Asia, and Da Nang is basically a boom town right now. Great expat and nightlife scene, with the only negative being that visas are not that great.
Cost of living in Da Nang – $700–1,500

4) Chiang Mai, Thailand
One of the original digital nomad hubs in South-East Asia, Chiang Mai still holds its place thanks to cheap living, a huge expat and nomad community, endless cafés, and strong co-working infrastructure. It is no longer the undisputed king it once was, but it remains one of the easiest places in the region to live and work remotely.
Cost of living in Chiang Mai – $800–1,500

3) Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon, Vietnam
Vietnam has the best food and cost of living in South-East Asia, and Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as the cool kids call it, is the best in the country. Great café scene and now a fast-growing co-working scene with great overall connectivity. Only issue is the visas.
Cost of living in Saigon – $900–1,500

2) Canggu / Bali, Indonesia
It would be easy to include six different parts of Bali, so I have just lumped it all together. Bali is huge and has something for basically every budget or want, with some of the best scenery in the world. I mean I could even include Gili and Lombok here.
There is a reason Bali is so popular with nomads. They offer a great 5-year tourist visa, as well as a nomad visa.
Cost of living in Bali – $1,000–3,000

1) Phnom Penh, Cambodia
I am sure this will be controversial to some, but Phnom Penh is the best digital nomad city in South-East Asia for a number of reasons. Firstly it has everything you could want, but without the traffic and crime of other cities, but most importantly it is cheap and very easy to live in. You buy your visa here, after which you can open a bank account and basically live like a human.
Things can and probably will change, but for the time being at least nowhere even comes close to matching Phnom Penh as a digital nomad haven.
Cost of living in Phnom Penh – $900–1,500

Conclusion
Which of the actual digital nomad cities in South-East Asia suits you best will obviously depend on what balance you personally need. Saigon is the best place to party, but can get on top of you, Bali is great but very cliché, while Phnom Penh, while the best in our mind, can be quiet for some.
